Attorney Profile- Tom Shelton

Tom grew up in Kansas City before attending the University of Kansas.  He graduated in 1986 with a B.A. degree in history and political science.  After graduating Tom earned an LL.B degree from the University of East Anglia School of Law in Norwich, England.  Subsequently, Tom returned to the United States and earned a J.D. degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  Shelton was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1992.

Along with his experience in private practice, Mr. Shelton served as General Counsel of a 125-person insurance brokerage firm for five years. He handled all legal matters such as negotiating contracts, buying and selling assets, human resources, regulatory affairs, corporate governance and managing disputes. Tom also served in management and personally implemented many of the new programs he created.  He has worked as Legal Counsel and Director of Business Development for a start-up Internet business and as Director of Investments for an Internet new media company.

 Shelton’s believes that views his experience on the front lines in business development and management is an invaluable resource in practicing law.  Mr. Shelton's broad range of practical business experience and technical expertise allows him to provide sound and creative solutions in an understandable and practical manner.  Mr. Shelton seeks to provide counsel that goes substantially beyond identifying and handling narrow legal issues. He strives to understand the client's short- and long-term business objectives, propose alternative solutions for achieving those objectives and assist in carrying out all aspects of the client's business plan.

Mr. Shelton enjoys spending time with his wife Sherri and their two dogs.  He currently serves on the board of the Parkinson Foundation of the Heartland and also assists the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City.
